Dragonflies

Botanical Glossary - Home

This beauty is one of our largest dragonflies, with a wingspan of almost 5 inches it is a strong flyer and doesn't have to rest often. The thorax is a bright leaf-green and unmarked, the forehead bears a black, spade shaped spot in a blue patch, light brown eyes that meet in the center of the forehead. The abdomen has a dark stripe in top and immature Green Darners have dull red abdomen sides which will darken and change with maturity. This is an uncommon dragonfly throughout the southern portion of BC, but common in some coastal areas. They can be seen darting about hunting for food between mid Spring to early Fall.
