Photos - Views of the tool shed at the north side of the Stewart Farm House located at 13723 Crescent Road in Surrey. Of particular interest are the meat hooks hanging from 2x8 siding (center frame) and the children's wooden wagon (frame right).

Photos - Frames left and right: A donkey engine in the tool shed probably used for saw and tool sharpening and maintenance.

Center frame: The northern side of the Stewart Farm House as seen from the south entrance of the tool shed.

Photos - Frames left and center: The root cellar with thick stone walls and sunken dirt floor, where all things that were needed to keep cool were kept until the invention of the refrigerator. At the turn of the 20th century, most people in Surrey had a root cellar on their farm. This cellar was built in 1894 and is a fine example of exposed stone walls and gabled roof. Root cellars were excellent for providing fruit and vegetable storage, especially carrots, onions, turnips, beets, and potatoes, also apples, cabbage, cauliflower, peppers, squash and pumpkins. Seasonal preserves could also be stored here.

This man-made cave-like structure was cool, moist interior with ideal 0' to 10' Celsius temperatures in warm months and winter months, keeping stored goods from spoiling. Special features include vents in front and back to provide a path for moving air currents allowing the fruit and vegetables room to breathe.

Frame right: A newer addition to the Stewart Farm House, the automobile shed.
