Frames right and center: The Root Cellar and the western side of the Stewart Farmhouse from the Boat Building heritage site near Ward's Marina. The root cellar with thick stone walls and sunken dirt floor, where all things that were needed to keep cool were kept until the invention of the refrigerator. At the turn of the 20th century, most people in Surrey had a root cellar on their farm. This cellar was built in 1894 and is a fine example of exposed stone walls and gabled roof. Root cellars were excellent for providing fruit and vegetable storage, especially carrots, onions, turnips, beets, and potatoes, also apples, cabbage, cauliflower, peppers, squash and pumpkins. Seasonal preserves could also be stored here.

The Bunkhouse were the hired hands would live on the Stewart Farm.

Photos - L-R - Cat in a tree. Hunting I suppose. I asked it's name, but the feline wouldn't answer in anything but a "Meow."

The fire hydrant at the Stewart Farm is a creation made by Terminal City Iron Works in Vancouver.

Forcythia Intermedia (Forsythia, Golden Bells) is deciduous shrub with hollow stems and laminate pith growing up to about 16 feet tall - native to East Asia this yellow blossoming bush does well in the Pacific Northwest in low to middle elevations.
