Sullivan Machinery Company is an owned Subsidiary of the Joy Manufacturing Company of Pittsburg, U.S.A. and has been doing business in Canada since 1920. The same year in which the Sullivan Machinery Company opened a sales office for its Claremont and Michigan city product in 1910 a small manufacturing unit began the assembly of portable compressors from parts produced in other Canadian shops. Hoists, diamond-drills and oil furnaces were added in 1934 when the plant was moved to Dundas, Ont. Plans for further expansion had to wait through the war years but in 1947 Joy Manufacturing Company and the Sullivan Machinery Company merged their Canadian organizations, which then became the Joy-Sullivan (Canada) Limited and, subsequently, the Joy Manufacturing Company (Canada) Limited, the company under review. The next important development was the purchase of a big machine and tool plant at Galt, Ont., and so began the development of the present well planned manufacturing operation.

Local distribution is at 2400 volts and the interconnection point to BC Hydro is fed at 12,500 Volts through Silversmith's substation. Silversmith Power and Light Corporation is 100% locally owned and is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of the Historic Silversmith hydroelectric generating station and the historic site of Sandon. It is still in operational condition and functions as a power generating station.
