Photos - Looking like a delicate paint brush, this is Geum Triflorum (Old Man's Whiskers) a member of the avens family with clustered basal leaves, long stalked, compound and divided into many leaflets crowded together in sometimes toothed segments. The flowers are reddish in color, urn shaped with pink to yellow petals and purple colored sepals that look like a long tuft of hair when in blossom.

Photos - L-R - This is Old Man's Whiskers flower heads before they bloom.

A shot of Layer Cake Mountain looking southwest to Myra Regional Park. This is the edge of the cliff, where grasses and sage meet solid rock - one misstep here and it is a long way down.

Selaginella Wallacei (Wallace's Selaginella) in a large mop beside the trail. This clubmoss likes rocky cliff faces and ledges, mossy bluffs, rocky slopes in exposed to shaded areas at lower elevations. Stems are low and horizontal, forming loose, tangled mats.

Photos - The peak of Layer Cake Mountain: Looking south toward the southern rim of Gallaghers Canyon (left), The top layer of volcanic cliff face (center) and a small boulder with Xanthoparmelia Cumberlandia (Questionable Rock-frog) looking like a large, gray bulls-eye on the rock side (right). Questionable Rock-frog is a medium sized or large, orbicular, loosely appreassed leaf lichen with rounded lobe tips, pale yellowish to gray greenish with brownish apothecia. Usually found on rock in open sites at lower elevations.
