Looking to the North at Silver Island Mountains from Interstate 80 from Mile 34 of a 37 mile journey across the salt flats.

The Bonneville Salt Flats are one of the most unique places on Earth - they play host to some of the most famous of modern land-speed record holders and attempted record breakers. Auto speed and endurance records are what have made this area of global renown starting with Teddy Tetzlaff and his Blitzen Benz in 1914 when he made an unofficial speed record of 141.73 mph.

The Salt Flats are located 120 miles west of Salt Lake City, Utah beside I-80 just east of Wendover, in the bordering state of Nevada. This was once a great salt lake during the last ice age and is a remnant of lake Bonneville which covered about one-third of Utah from 32,000 to 10,000 years ago.

Silver Island Mountains - Miles and miles of smooth, white Salt Flat. Normally I would have found a spot to camp and put up a tent for sleep, but there is no place to camp on the salt flat. I kept going until after dark till I finished my course across the waste land. Fortunately for me, as I crossed the 37 mile salt flat, there was cloud cover, so I didn't have the solar concerns that I thought might be rather brutal. However, I did have a major head wind as I crossed and at times I had to get off my bike and walk - July 31, 2011.
