Buteo Jamaicensis (Red-tailed Hawk) Brandt's Creek wildlife corridor, takes off from a power pole along Weddle Place in Kelowna BC. December 17, 2010.
The Brandt's Creek wildlife corridor commences about Richter Street and heads east along Weddle Place until Gordon Drive where it does a northern where Brant Avenue is located, follows the base of the hill toward Clement. Most times if you are quiet while walking along Weddle Place, you can see a number of interesting wildlife such as Hawks, field mice and Muskrats.
The Red-tailed Hawk is usually 19 to 25 inches in height, has a reddish tail underneath (sometimes pale, with just a hint of red - immature birds are rather gray in color) with light reddish breast with broad band streaks across the belly. This large hawk is easily mistaken for an immature eagle, ranges in open country, woodlands mountains, marsh area, tidal flats and roadsides - soaring high, searching for rodents, rabbits, small birds reptiles and grasshoppers.
