I found this huge Red-tailed Hawk perched in a tree as I cycled along Pitt River (East shore) Trans Canada Trail. Evidently I got a bit too close and off he went for a perch further away.

Buteo Jamaicensis (Red-tailed Hawk, Dark Morph) Trans Canada Trail, Pitt River - winter

The Red-tailed Hawk is usually 19 to 25 inches in height, has a reddish tail underneath (sometimes pale, with just a hint of red - immature birds are rather gray in color) with light reddish breast with broad band streaks across the belly. This large hawk is easily mistaken for an immature eagle, ranges in open country, woodlands mountains, marsh area, tidal flats and roadsides - soaring high, searching for rodents, rabbits, small birds reptiles and grasshoppers.
