Botanical Glossary - Home

This is a small, sparrow-sized sandpiper which are commonly known as "Peeps," in North America, but the British call this Eurasian stray "Stints." This migratory bird hangs out in Alaska in the Aleutians during summer, but turns up sometimes in other places in off-season. Here this bird is a rare stray which I photographed along the Kitsilano Foreshore near Macdonald street recently. An all together skittish bird, I was able to stay still long enough for a large flock of perhaps 20 to 30 to accept my presence and allow me to snap a few dozen shots of them hungrily turning over rocks and seaweed for aquatic bugs and small bits of ocean plants, seeds, insects, crustaceans or tasty tidbits. This bird has black legs, unwebbed toes and a clear breast in non-breeding, winter times. It usually migrates along the coastline to southern California.
