California Quail sits on a chain-link fence in Kelowna behind the Highlands Retirement Residence on Glenmore Drive in Kelowna. Folks here regularly put out handfuls of bird seed in the back yard for the growing Quail population.

The California Quail is small, plump, grayish all over with a short black plume curving forward and down from the forehead. Males have a black throat bordered with white, giving the Quail a distinct face. At one time in Kelowna's past, Quail had been hunted to the verge of extinction. Now the Quail have recovered and can be seen in backyard rural areas foraging for seeds and small insects.
