Dragonflies

Botanical Glossary - Home

Yummy munchie! Hudsonian Whiteface dragonfly munches of a female Northern Bluet (Enallagma Cyathigerum) today at Pitt Lake.

Mmmmm.... that tasts good! The Whiteface stops for a few minutes to eat the still squirming and clinging Damselfly after he caught it in mid air. The Boreal Whiteface is more common than the Hudsonian Whiteface but is larger and has larger red spots (with one large red spot near the tip). Also, the Boreal Whiteface is rare west of the Coastal mountains, while the Hudsonian is common and widespread in our region (from April to early September). The wings are clear and very hard to see, looking like an airborne nail when they fly - most abundant in boggy lake shores and peatlands in mountain areas.

Leucorrhinia Hudsonica - Hudsonian Whiteface - Nature Dyke Trail, Pitt Lake, Pitt Meadows BC - July 05, 2007.
