Dragonflies

Each of the eight-spot skimmer wings bears two large patches of color - mature males and some females also have white patches between dark ones (and near the wing tips which are clear). The thorax has two pale stripes (just below the wings on each side), abdominal segments have yellow racing stripes. Mature males often have a coating of light gray dust (pruinescence) which gives the look similar to White tail dragon flies. These skimmers fly mid-spring to mid-fall in our area.
Libellula Forensis - Eight-spot Skimmer, female - Jericho Pond, Kitsilano, Vancouver BC - Summer.
