Photos - More detailed views of the Family
of Man sculpture. These ten 6.5-metre tall skinny figures live on the
grounds of the Calgary Board of Education, on Macleod Trail South. They weigh
an average of only 680 kilograms, being sculpted in aluminum by English artist
Mario Armengol. This statue was donated to the City of Calgary by Maxwell
Cummings and sons in 1968.
It was dedicated by the Duke of Kent on the 8th of July 1968. I think the
lighting is very harsh with the sculptures being back lit, but it makes for
a very stark and contrasty image. In 1967, the World Fair was held in Montreal
Canada. At this meeting of nations, titled Expo 67, Great Britain exhibited
a curious piece of artwork created by sculptor Mario Armengol. The artist
created the sculpture in response to the request for the creation of an art
piece to express the serious task of resolving international issues.

Photos - Frame left: The Bow construction site at 5th avenue SE - I'm told that there is no shortage of work here, but the problem is that there aren't enough accommodations which causes an unusual amount of homelessness amongst the working class.
Frames right and center: Front lobby of the Bow Valley Delta Hotel located at 209 - 4th avenue SE. Center frame shows an artistic hanging lamp with interesting twists of colored paper with light shining through.

Frames right and center: Calgary International (YYC) Airport is the main access point for Banff and the Canadian Rockies. The airport is approximately 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Calgary and approximately 144 kilometers (90 miles) from Banff in Canadas Alberta Province. Over 25 airlines and several charter services operate at the airport offering nonstop flights to 29 destinations in Canada, 12 destinations in the U.S. and two overseas flights to London and Frankfurt. The spectacular beauty of the Canadian Rockies draws many tourists, so there are also several seasonal flights. In the past, travelers have complained about a dearth of shopping and eating options on the airside, but a recent renovation of Concourse B/C has remedied that. Like many Canadian airports, travelers are charged an Airport Improvement Fee to support ongoing projects. As of August, 2006, the fee is $10 for short haul flights within Alberta and $15 for all other destinations. Connecting passengers are exempt.
