With ragged, brownish wing margins and overall tawny-golden above with blackish blotches and bright yellowish tan color below marked with tiny dots and striations. Generally there are two broods, one in early spring and another in late fall. Up to 2 inches long, this butterfly likes to fly in wooded canyon lands, stream sides, wooded forests and wooded city parks near water.
