Snowy Kelowna BC
A thick blanket of snow - All is still and quiet at 1358 Bertram Street, Kelowna BC - February 06, 2011.
The Okanagan Valley was issued a heavy snowfall warning early Sunday morning and by 5 PM there was an accumulation of 8 inches of the white stuff.
This is the diamond in the ruff for Bertram Street. Located at the corner of Doyle and Bertram (1358 Bertram), you can feel that this is one of the oldest houses in the area and you would be right. The house was owned by the first Mayor of Kelowna and the construction dates back into the 1890s. It is now owned by Mary-Ann and Nick Kummer who have done well by themselves by purchasing a number of vintage houses on Bertram street and rent out rooms to students and travelers. The house is typical turn-of-the-century farmhouse style of architecture and has been converted to a rental unit.
Kelowna was incorporated into a city in May 1905. The new city had a population of 600. Its first mayor was Henry (Harry) William Raymer (1905 - 1906). The first Kelowna Regatta was held in 1906. This consisted of canoe and boat races, swimming, diving, and water oriented events. Soon competition with other towns in the Okanagan began. In time, towns as far away as Vancouver (even before the road link) came to the annual event.
