Sherman Tank - On display at Connaught's Own Drill Hall on Beatty Street by Dunsmuir.

This model tank M4A3E8, had a crew of 5, weighed 32 tonnes with a top speed of 48 Km/Hr. The main armament is a 76mm main gun with two 30 caliber machine guns - in service between 1943 and 1970.

On August 8th and 9th 1944, the British Columbia Regiment (Duke of Connaught's Own), then designated 28th Canadian Armored Regiment, was commanded by Lcol D.G. Worthington in his Sherman Tank "Boss". In Sherman Tanks similar to this one, they fought a heroic 14 hour battle on Hill 140 North of the town of Falaise, France. When the Battle had ended, the "Dukes" had suffered heavily, loosing many tanks and men, including thier commanding officer, to overwhelming enemy fire. This tank on Beatty Street is dedicated to the memory of that battle and those who lost their lives fighting to preserve our way of life.

This medieval style, fortress-like landmark is Vancouver 's earliest drill hall. Its notable features include two rounded towers complete with battlements, and rusticated stone trim. Three and a half foot thick walls and a parapet made from Gabriola Island limestone rest solidly on a foundation of huge granite blocks. The Hall has always housed Vancouver's and British Columbia's senior militia regiment, The British Columbia Regiment - Duke of Connaught's Own. The Drill Hall, which continues to be the Home of the Regiment was formally opened on the 30th September, 1901, by HRH The Duke of Cornwall and York, who later became King George V. Two commemorative chairs built specially for the Duke and Duchess reside in the Regimental museum.
