Fall Colors - Simon Fraser University
Looking East from the Convocation Mall toward the steps leading into the Academic Quadrangle at SFU in Burnaby BC - October 21, 2008.
Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain with Erickson/Massey, planners and design coordinators. The first phase of the university was built between 1963 to 1965.
The BC Government held an architectural competition to seek an artistic and imaginative plan for a new university. Unanimous winners Arthur Erickson and Geoffry Massey produced a radical linear scheme that responds to the ridge-like quality of the construction site at Burnaby Mountain. They determined the plan for integrating the academic disciplines and offered a design concept for the individual buildings. A glass-covered central mall (Convocation Mall by Erickson/Massey) was conceived as a meeting place and walkway with links to residences at the west and the Academic Quadrangle to the east (by Zoltan S. Kiss). The Theater and WAC Bennett Library opens onto the Convocation Mall.
Expansion of the Campus has continued over the years. Arthur Erickson remained an adviser on all new designs. Prominent new construction includes the Academic Services Building (Robert F. Harrison 1971); the University Center Building (Rhone and Iredale 1972); a Daycare Center (Bruno Freschi 1976); expansion to the Classroom Block (Downs and Archambault 1978); additions to the Gym (McNab, Barkley, Logan and Young 1976) and the Library (Robert F. Harrison 1976).
